My family and I used to dine here quite regularly and it was always a pleasant experience. Recently we returned after about 3 years and the place has clearly gone downhill in a big way. We reserved a table for five. When we got there they'd apparrently "forgotten". There were plenty of free tables they could have pushed together but they insisted on cramming all five of us onto a round table which only seated four. I asked about a larger table in the corner and was told that it was reserved for 8 people (it was not used in the entire time we were there). Once we were seated the staff seemed to ignore us until one of my family called a waiter over to order some drinks. Four desserts were ordered and only three were brought out. As we couldn't be bothered to wait for the attention of a waiter the person who ordered the dessert decided to skip it. Naturally, when we received the bill we were charged for the dessert which we insisted on them removing. We paid the bill to the exact penny.

Visited with a friend on a Friday night on her recommendation. Although we had booked a table for 8pm we were told the table wasn't ready and to wait at the bar. Much to our disgust table wasn't ready until 8.55pm! They were really busy so although we'd already had a long wait service was very slow. Food when we did eventually get it was excellent. Food experience was good enough to make me want to revisit but unsure if I'd want to put up with all the waiting again!

5 of us visited for sunday lunch on 29th July to celebrate birthday and i have to say it was the most enjoyable meal we have ever had, the food, service and general atmosphere was superb from start to finish. We'll certainly be going back again and would advise anyone who enjoys fantastic food to pay bagatti's a visit, you won't be disappointed

Visited Bagatti's with my family on a Sunday evening. When we arrived at the restaurant we were pleasantly greeted and after being seated, asked if we wanted drinks straight away. Although no complimentary olives were on our table when we arrived, they were brought over. Our waiter who took our order was not that friendly at first, but when I wanted to change my order later, a waitress came over and was happy to recommend an alternative dish. The starter and main course when they arrived were very tasty. While the pasta and spaghetti dishes were generous servings, the meal from the Main Course menu was not (the person in our party who ordered the main course was hungry soon after). I would recommend Bagatti’s as a good place to eat in Croydon be it for families with kids, young people or couples of any age as the restaurant is very welcoming. We paid about £15 per head without desert, the food is not cheap but value for money. We would go to Bagatti’s again.

I have been going to Bagatti's since i was about 12 years old and it keeps getting better.. The owner Peter is very very friendly and all of his staff make you feel very welcome.. The food is fantastic and they have a wide range of pasta dishes as well as superb fillet steaks and my mum loves their lamb..The specials are always very varied and the head chef Oswaldo is a genius.. I recently went down on a monday night for live music with Leon and Glen and it was the best night i had in ages! Great food, great wine and a great night out!!

Its a lovely restaurant if your in the mood for pasta, service is usually fast and you dont have to book. its also open at lunch times if you fancy a big lunch. They also do takeaways, which is fantastic if you cant be bothered to cook and dont want a greasy chineese, the food ends turns up in plastic containers tasting equally as good as in the restaurant!

bit over priced for what is on offer, not very varied menu, the restaurant its self isnt laid out well the tabels are very close to each other and the staff seemed to have trouble getting from tabel to tabel due to the lack of space.

Nice but flavours VERY overboard. Try to make you feel one of the family, however I had mussels for starters with a garlic/infused tomato and wine sauce and the smell stayed with me for days! Very ott on some of the flavours and can't fault the size of the portions. Nice but not pleasant. Would not rush back.

This lively Italian restaurant brings you closer to Italy in every way. Looks like a typical Italian bar (if you have ever been to Italy you will know what I mean). With their love of Italian football which is very obvious, it has a family run atmosphere. It's always busy and until recently you did not have to book but there was, unfortunately, quite a long wait. Very tasty and well presented LARGE portions of Pasta ranging from meat, veggie and fish based is the basis of the continued success of this restaurant. Very good value for money but the drinks are on the expensive side (watch out, sometimes worth haggling over). Excellent if you don't want a romantic meal for two.

Excellent restaurant! The Italian award winning Head Chef (from a village near Milan) cooks the most delicious dishes, traditional to his home village. The portions are very generous and displayed articulately. The waiters and manager are very friendly and make great suggestions for which dish to go for depending on what you would like. This is my favourite take away and eat in cafe in Croydon. The food and service is always amazing and served with a smile. I love pasta, which is great as this is their speciality dish. Take away you pay £4.95 and get any take away pasta and either garlic bread (this is a whole panini!!) or side salad. The pasta is cooked perfectly down to the last second and the sauces are to die for. Great service, Great food and Great prices. 5 Stars in my book!

I am very surprised that no one has reviewed Bar Ispani, however, they may have not because they don't want anyone else to know about this gem hidden within the Whitgift Centre. I'm going to blow it's cover now, but this place is great and is one of my favourite places to go in Croydon. Italian through and through, the speciality of the place is pasta, but they also serve paninis, jacket potatoes and salads in a huge variety of ways. The only downsides to Bar Ispani is that they are closed on Sundays, closed in the evenings and sometimes don't hit the mark on the basic items on the menu....but other than that, go there...but don't tell anyone else about it!

Bella Italia - George Street
The owners of Bella Italia (Tragus Limited) say on their web site that they are one of the UK's largest independent restaurant companies with more than 280 sites across the country serving over 20 million meals every year. This suggests they know how to get things right. So the restaurant should be clean, child friendly, attractive and the food should be edible and the prices reasonable. All the boxes were ticked when I went there last Sunday. The one variable that can't be mass produced is the staff but they have done rather well here. Steve was front of house and he knows all about keeping the customer happy. I recommend.

Great, fresh Italian meals. As it ought to be. Real Italian atmosphere with many props. We were with 5 of us, and all had a different order and all were very satisfied about the taste. I don't know the name of the street, but it was around the corner from Allders (Whitgift Center).

We visited the Bella Vita restaurant in Shirley and the food was terrible - actually the better word to describe it was VILE they used no fresh produce -the mushrooms were tinned - the sauces tasted like tomato soup (the cheap brand) and the spaghetti looked and tasted at least a day old .We were not the only table complaining on how bad the food tasted on the evening we ate there. Other tables were also displeased by the taste. I would never eat here again - please avoid!

A great family restaurant. Service is absolutely excellent. The menu has just had some additions made to it but still lacks variety and is seafood biased but is easily made up for by the friendly staff, reasonable price of drinks and good atmosphere. I would recommend it for larger family celebrations.

As this is one of my favourite restaurants, I thought I would make a few comments to contradict the last review. I eat the BRUSCHETTA every time I go in there and I can assure you it does not contain pesto, but fresh basil and of course it contains tomatoes, it's a bruschetta! It is served on homemade flat bread, it can be crispy but it's truly authentic italian. I love the food, the friendly service and value for money. I would much rather eat at a family restaurant run by a real ITALIAN (I have met him, he really is Italian!) with freshly cooked food then a chain of pizza restaurants where most food arrives there pre-cooked. Don't take my word for it, please venture a little bit out of the centre of Croydon and experience it for yourselves.

Absolute crap! To say that this is the true taste of an Italian restaurant is somewhat ridiculous! I very much doubt the chef himself is Italian and if so, well he obviously has never been trained by one! As a family we tend to go to Pizza Express, so in comparison to that, well it just cannot be compared! The food was very dull; no taste. The brushetta was over filled with pesto and tomatoes, and the bread was dry and extremely difficult to cut! All of us ordered a different dish and all of us had the same opinion. On a good note however the service was fine; very friendly staff. Although I am sure there are worst restaurants, I still would not recommend any one to visit this restaurant - a waste of money!

Why go to a chain like Pizza Express or a big faceless entity like Bugattis when you can get a real taste of Italy at Bibi and Beppe? Fantastic food (try the limoncello and mint risotto) freshly cooked with great service - it's almost like you are in Tuscany in a contemporary, Italian restaurant. Highly recommended and really excellent value for money.

I have eaten here quite a few times and was disappointed to see a negative revue,The food has always been generous and made to order so much so that any ingredients that do not go with ones taste buds can be removed. It is relativley new and we are always asked for our comments to assist in its development and with that there are regular menu changes. Try the Pumpkin & Ginger soup or the Bibi & Beppe lasagne there are stunning, service is friendly and there when you need it, and if you havent eaten your fill then your names Homer Simpson. Nice to see a restaurant that keeps it fresh is not a CHAIN and is a real friendly family Italian restaurant. A nice warm night out.

Risotto Central!! So authentic you almost need to take your passport, as this should be considered Italian Sovereign Territory- transplanted to exotic south Croydon. One of the worst restaurants I have been to. Service freindly but very slow - quick to deliver the high margin wine though! It took 2 hours for the meal to arrive and I sent mine back as it was inedible. Only silver lining was the chief asked what was wrong with it but by that time all we wanted to do was leave. Bland food, bland decor and over priced - £12 for a reheated steak and 4 slices of fried potato????!!!

I have just purchased a take away from Cafe' Giardino, and have to say I am appalled at what was given to me. I ordered a Cumberland sausage sandwich. I first had to repeat the order 3 times before the communication between myself and the cashier had been established. I handed over my £3 and in exchange got 2 pieces of dry, un-buttered cheap bread, and 2 cremated sausages in bits where they had fallen apart. When i eventually plucked up the courage to have a taste it was as rank as it looked. Avoid this place at all costs, over priced, horrid food and below average staff.

I think this place is fairly new. Decorated very nicely but I wouldn't recommend at all. For the standard of food we found it very overpriced. The service was particularly slow and not very friendly, we waited nearly 50 minutes for a starter! All in all I wouldn't bother returning.

My family and I were so impressed with this restaurant that we as a family voted to dine there each and everyone of the 6 nights we stayed in Croydon. My 4 children 13,16,19,21 and my wife could have picked restaurants in London, but instead choose IL Ponte each night. You will not regrett it. Great Food. Great Decor. Great Manager. All in all a great place. There is one slight reservation - in that the Jekyl and Hyde attitude of the staff. When asking a question, one would be helpful, explaining and offering advice, where as the otehr would attempt to look though you, abut if eye contact was made, come over and make YOU feel as if you were in the worng for asking. Great place for great food - just make sure you are served by the right waitress!!

We went here on recommendation and was pleasently surprised that it was better than we had expected, the staff are efficient and very friendly, will go out of their way to make your meal pleasent, we had our children with us the first time and they were very welcome even though they don't have a child's menu they suggested sharing as the portions are rather large for a child, atmosphere is great on a Saturday, feel like you are on holiday, we have been back several times now and would recommend to anyone, couples or large parties are well catered for, the bar is of an ample size if you should have to wait for your table, which we haven't had to do. Do try, great food, make your pizzas there and then, definetly worth the wait!

Wow! Mary Finnigan certainly is articulate isn't she? I have been going to La Scarpetta since it opened in 2007 & haven't been dissapointed yet. The food is always amazing and the atmosphere is always buzzing. I have been with friends and with family with small kids and the service has without fail been welcoming, friendly and efficient. We have had our Christmas do here & I came for New Years Eve too. Fabulous evenings! I really do recommend this place, it's an absolute gem.

do not listen to Mary Finnegan, she must be a complete mug. la scarpetta's does wonderful food, and even though the restaurant is always busy, (obviously most ppl dont agree with mary finnegan) the service is always very good. i would recommend it to anybody who wants a very tasty meal and good service. not the cheapest place to eat, but then you dont get good food without paying for it.

It was absolutely Crrrap, the service was appaling, we waited for 40 minutes for starter, then starters came, it was bloody wrong table. waiters think the bloody earth owe them something, they think they are the best thing that ever happens to earth. wine not replenished, dessert menu not offered, if you are planning to visit, take a butler with you because the waiters dont give a flying circus about customers.

Food used to be good, until the owner offered a promotion of two pastas for one. The portion sizes reduced over time. When I queried the owner he got mad and reduced the quality of my dish by adding chicken bones and shredded chicken bits instead of the usual cubed chicken breast. Nasty. Ate there last year a few times and was ok. Tried again earlier this year and very disappointed. Staff are very slack, seem to have lost interest. After the starter all our cutlery was taken away and got offered a dessert menu. Explained we were waiting for our main and waiter told us off for letting him take cutlery!!! I kept looking for a You've Been Framed Camera - it was so Fawlty Towers!!! A bottle of red wine came from the store cupboard/freezer so I suggested it was too cold and should be room temp. He said I will warm it up for you. Came back 10 mins later and poured some into a glass - there was steam coming off it!!! Mussels were as in a very watery onion soup and agree with S Milne too much salt. Also pan fried chicken breast, potatoes all swimming in nasty brown gravy and a portion of salad - not a good combination. Had to laugh about it in the end but sorry not planning to revisit.

Visit Saturday 5 April 2008 (2nd visit)what a disappointment. Mussels, some were not open (dangerous) and some tasted awful. Waitress not interested why I had not eaten them. Sauce was just cream with raw onions. Chilli and garlic prawns rubbery and overcooked, too much tomato. Sea bass over cooked and sloppy, everything very salty. Steak fine but a bit chewy. Stick to the pasta rather than the specials.

A pleasant welcome, good service, comfy tables and relaxed environment. Helpful staff and food a cut above the average. Wine list is exclusively Italian and not the cheapest, but has some interesting selections. Also caters well for those needing a gluten free diet. Tactically suprisingly near to Croydon. We entered East Croydon station at 7:00 and were at our table by 7:20. Worth the trek.

For those who loved Pasta San Giorgio you will be bitterly dissapointed that this wonderful restaurant is now closed (begining October 2008) with the Croydon redevelopment plans from Katharine St to George St which has already seen numerous shops and bars close down. It is with regret, but the owners have decided to call it a day and won't be opening somewhere else. To those who didn't appreciate the quality of food especially noticeable at lunchtime when they were not rushed off their feet(!!) it will be a sorely missed restaurant which has been part of the institution of Croydon for many many years.

Please please please do not spend your money here, I thought it had great variety of local food dishes, unfortunately we ordered the anti pasti it was the cheap ham you buy from the supermarket for 80p (with all the fat) urrrr, the seafood was boiled and left in some kind of vinegar that tasted awful. I thought the mains may be able to compensate but when I ordered the seafood spaghetti it was so dry with no sauce that it stuck to the roof of my mouth, and the prawns tasted funny and now I’m home I feel sick because I think the seafood was off. I took my friend here and to be honest I was embarrassed by the cheap, frankly disgusting food I was served. I have visited allot of restaurants all over the country and this one is without a doubt the worst Italian resturants I have ever experienced don’t waste your money. Please San Giorgio read this review and sort out your quality of food and cooking.

Never to return. I had the crab ravioli off the specials menu.The only hint of crab was to be found in the string of crab sticks (not much crab in those!)which were dumped on top of the cheese filled ravioli. I felt conned! Another in our party was questioning whether the fillet he ordered was indeed a fillet. Overall, very below average with painfully slow and inattentive service. Won't be going back.

Won't be going here again, service was slow - only 2 staff for the whole restaurant on a fairly busy lunchtime. My pasta was a small step up from school dinner - bland and tasteless. The crab ravioli had only a passing acquaintance with a crab, steak was small and buried in a brown sauce. Roast potatoes seemed an odd choice when new ones are available.

Have been going here with friends for years and the food, staff and value for money have always been excellent. Great choice of starters and countless varieties of pastas which you can have with your favourite sauce. There's always "The Specials" to choose from too which include fish and meat dishes if you don't fancy pasta. Pizza Hut and fellows of its genre are a long way from my first choice. With, however, 9 youngsters in tow it seemed like a reasonable choice. Service was actually very good, the food maybe took a little while to arrive but the polite attentive waitresses could not be faulted. A Pizza Hut pizza is a bit like a Ford Mondeo. Largish, competent and up to the task but nothing to write home about. I guess any complaint would be that the Ice Cream machine lacks instructions for adults to follow (children have no trouble with it at all!) Altogether not my scene, but not bad, not bad at all.

What lurked in the cooking pot of this place was nothing short of repulsive. I have never seen anything like it before in my life. Three of us ordered 'King Prawn',knowing we like them for their taste and texture. Served before us,lay what looked like enlarged cooked caterpillars. They were some sort of reformed thing! I can say without any reservation that Santini's beats any Italian restaurant I know, and by an almost embarrassing degree. The place is small, cozy and very family, and Lorenzo the cook dishes up meals that verge on excellent. Of particular note are the two regular offers - a Pasta Deal, which is about £7.20 for an italian salad, any pasta of your choice and a glass of wine, and the gourmet evenings, run once a month (book in advance) which are fantastic. £33 buys you an evening of five courses, where all the food and wine comes from a particular region of Italy. This covers all food and wine (he just keep bringing more bottles...) plus the coffee. And it's Santini's at it's best. Santini's is very near the train station and the buses. It's small, so no really big parties (my guess is no more than a dozen) and it's prety quiet - not really a stag night venue! On the other hand, if you're after a nice, quiet, intimate Italian serving perfect food, this is The Place for you.

There is a real family run atmosphere - great food and great service - the Chef even comes out at the end of the evening to chat to everyone! Having visited other franchises of this restaurant, I had expected good things. However, good food was let down by terrible service. On arrival, we were asked to wait for "10 minutes" for a table, in spite of the fact that there were a number of empty tables which were ready for use. After 15-20 minutes of being ignored (not even offered a drink), we asked how much longer the wait would be, only to be directed to a table which had been free all along! Regrettably, the sluggish service continued for the rest of the evening, ruining what would otherwise have been a pleasant, albeit unexciting, meal.

Beautifully laid out with romantic, up-to-date atmosphere with relaxing,not loud music. Excellent value for money with large non-smoking area and upstairs for large groups and partys.
