Beijing Cottage One of the best Chinese restaurants I have tried. Food was fantastic. Really good flavours and not greasy or heavy. The service was excellent as waitress was really attentive to our needs. Would recommend to everyone. Suzz - Review dated 6 April 2010 Beijing Cottage Alex and Jo had a fab meal, beef in black bean sauce, crispy duck etc! Excellent value, great service and overall top place. helen edwards - Review dated 19 November 2007 Beijing Cottage If you want wicked food at a reasonable price, go here. Definately the best chinese i've ever tasted. King prawn in satay sauce....amazing!! Suzannah - Review dated 3 September 2006 Beijing Cottage Great restaurant, will definately visit again. Food was excellent, so was the service especially as the waitress kept me up to date with the football score that night!! So, great food, great service, great price. Racey - Review dated 29 August 2006 Beijing Cottage I saw the sign from outside and decided to go in for lunch. They offered 2 courses for around £4, which was fantastic and filled me right up. Very friendly service and the food was excellent. Best deal i have seen around!! Nik - Review dated 10 March 2005 Beijing Cottage This place has it all, great menu, great food, great staff, great service and it is never packed! I would say this is by far one of the best restaurants I have been to in Croydon! P.s I fancy the waitress aswell!! Haha! Chad - Review dated 25 January 2005 Bejing Cottage Good Food at Good Prices - Worth going to again & again. Dave - Review dated 3 November 2003 EXCELSIOR This restaurant deserves a reward for its buffet menu. We went there to celebrate my daughters nineteenth birthday and the atmosphere was welcoming, not to mention the food was mouth watering. I would recommend this restaurant for any occassion. Good value for money, good people, delicious yummy food. YEAHHH, you just have to try it for yourself. MONICA - Review dated 24 July 2007 Excelsior I like the EAT AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE buffet menu, fantastic! All the foods freshly cook with the order and served to the table. Highly recomended! Emilia - Review dated 11 February 2007 Happy Wok Happy Wok is the best chinese restaurant in town!!!!!!! Only £5 for all youi can eat Rachel - Review dated 12 October 2004 Happy Wok Food Glorious, staff very friendly. Fixed priced lunchtime buffet a must! Great place to eat with friends. Jane - Review dated 25 May 2002 Ittou It was lunchtime with a £4.50 special menu on offer. My companion was vegetarian and although no suitable dishes were offered on the 'special', the Ittou was quick to oblige with alternatives. The Hot and Sour which was thick, spicy and tasty. Wanton Noodles followed - a generous portion nicely prepared. Dessert menu was interesting. I selected the Banana and Sago whilst my companion chose Agar in a sweet sauce. We were also given a plate of Milk Bites - deep fried pastry and milk. The Ittou is not particularly cosy, but is clean, tidy and attractively decorated. Our waiter was attentive but not intrusive and happy to help with special requests. Menu offers the usual Chinese Fare with a few standard Thai dishes thrown in. The dessert menu, however, does make it stand out. If you are in the area (junction of Cherry Orchard and Lower Addiscombe road) then certainly worth a visit. Bonzai - Review dated 10 September 2002 Kabarda One of the best buffet restaurants around. Food lovely and always a good variety to choose from. Visit regulary as it is a favoutite of my 9 year old daughter. Reasonably priced. Well worth a visit. Natalie - Review dated 22 August 2007 Kabada, Coulsdon Went there for the first time as a birthday meal out. A large array of dishes from duck right through to sushi and almost something for everyone. Very nice and clean surroundings and toilets. Will definatly be going back and recomending to friends Gill - Review dated 13 January 2006 Kabada We just keep going back to this gem on the Brighton Road in Coulsdon. £13.50 gets you all you can eat. There is a fair selection of food available and deserts included too! Paul Cannon - Review dated 7 December 2003 Lams Garden This restaurant in Norbury is one recommended by a chinese waiter I know. The decor is inviting, staff warm and friendly and the food is glorious. Portions are large, children are welcome. It doesn't get overcrowded so probably better for those who want a quiet meal out. Madge - Review dated 14 August 2005 Lido i used to live in croydon and used this as a takeaway now everytime we visit my mother in law we have to have one i now live in east sussex and there is nothing that beats it and even my next door neighbour asks me to bring some back fantastic even my 4 year old loves it but then i did eat alot when i was pregnant with her. karen - Review dated 28 June 2006 MISO Noodle Bar Fast service, large portions, friendly atmosphere all for typically under £5 for main meal. Gets loud at times from being so busy and when we left customers were queueing out the door - however, will definately go back. Good value for money! A must! Enaid - Review dated 12 February 2004 My Old China Have been here on and off for a number of years - and also had take away. Sadly, it is NOT one of my favourites (service is great, but food always very greasy and often arrives over-cooked) and prices are on the high side. If choosing a Chinese in Purley and surroundings the restaurants in the WING YIP Centre at Purley Fiveways are infitely better Pippa - Review dated 21 August 2010 My Old China One of the best Chinese restaurants around. Even though the outside doesn't seem too welcoming, with an aging sign above the restaurant, the inside has a warm, oriental decor. Staff there are always so friendly. I was very impressed with the fact that my waitress was filling my cup with tea constantly for the whole 3 hours I was sat there with my friends. We went for the "Eat as much as you like" menu. The food came in seperate courses (we had 5 courses) starters, duck, soup, main and desserts. Each dish was cooked to a great standard, unlike some of the oily buffets you get out there. There were 5 of us in total, and having shared 2 bottles of wine and had some soft drinks and Chinese Tea, the bill only came to around £118. Very good value for money! Chris - Review dated 27 September 2009 My Old China By far the best Chinese restaurant I ever went to. Not only their service is outstanding but also the food is absolutely delicious - they are in a completely different league from most other Chinese restaurants I know. And they also have take away service!!! Located in Purley, under the railway bridge, you have to give it a go to understand what I mean. Pedro Duarte - Review dated 11 December 2008 My Old China My Old China is the best Chinese Restaurant I've ever been to. The service is very good, staff there are so friendly and attentive. What really impressed me on my first visit (and every visit) is that there is always somebody opening the door for us as we arrive. It is just so welcoming. The Menu is great, with much to choose from. We usually have the Set Menu B, which is very good value for money at 19pounds per head. It may sound quite dear, but it consists of 3 courses, a gorgeous Mixed Hor D'oevres for starters, followed by crispy duck and then 5-6 dishes in the main course; not only delicious but also very very filling. Last week, I tried one of the new set menus for £15, also fantastic. I also noticed that they do Eat as Much as You Like from Sundays to Thursdays, must try that one day. Katie - Review dated 16 November 2007 My Old China Had a takeaway delivery from here last week. Food was horrible! Very greasy, swamped in oil - really wouldn't recommend at all! Sarah - Review dated 26 June 2007 My old china Nice food, very dingy place kilman kororo - Review dated 9 June 2007 MY OLD CHINA EXCELLENT FOOD. (ASK FOR GIANT PRAWNS AS A STARTER AND THEIR CRISPY CHILLI BEEF IS LIKE HOT POPCORN). GREAT ATMOSPHERE AND SERVICE AND VALUE FOR MONEY CHRIS - Review dated 6 February 2004 Noodle Time When I first visited Noodle time, it was when my sister introduced me.I frowned upon it at first. She told me not to jusge a book by it cover.I ordered sweet and sour chicken with egg fried rice and can I just say it was delicious!I was most certainly wrong. It was fast, cheap and reasonably clean. . . I will rate this 9/10 because of some hygiene ajustments! I will be returning with great confidence! Sigourney - Review dated 18 January 2006 Noodle Time Noodle time is the bomb baby. Top quality food is prepared for you there and then. Poliet peps in there too. Everyboby say "NOODLE TIME" WILL GET YOUR HEAD SPRUNG. Toyah A Latoyah Acquaah - Review dated 8 March 2005 Noodle Time Noodle time is a 'Noodle Bar' which is like fast food Chinese style. I dont think anyone really has the right to complain, the food is good, cheap, clean, and the service is quick. Its liked by many; young to old, students to office workers. I dont know why im writing this review, its not the sort of place that people would read reviews before going, you just pop in for a bite to eat!! You dont read a review for your local cafe to checkout what their eggs and bacon are like? Anyway happy eating, good job Noodle time! Sion - Review dated 22 December 2004 Noodle Time NOODLE TIME IS A HEAVY RESTAURANT YER..DONT B PUTTING IT DOWN...THEY GOT TASTE YOU KNOW..DONT BE MESSING AROUND WITH THEIR FOOD, U C IT...COS IT'S GOOD QUALITY AND IT TASTE guuuuddddd...HU LOVES NOODLE TIME BAR...MS WOOZIE LIKE NOODLE TIME BAR..IS IT TRU...HMMMMMMM...I DO I DO I DOOOOOOOOOO...YER! It's HEAVY!!!!! Deashanay - Review dated 22 September 2002 Noodle Time I visited Noodle Time when it first opened and was quite impressed with the simple set-up, good value and decent cooking. Sadly on a couple of subsequent visits the food quality has gone downhill. I have no plans to return. Andy E - Review dated 13 June 2002 Royal Garden During our lunch time visit we found the food, service and ambiance excellent. We will certainly be visiting again MR & Mrs Murrell - Review dated 1 August 2010 Royal Garden Awful place, nice decor but the family working here are just plain rude. Service awful. I have been coming here and if it wasnt for the food would not return. But having seen a mouse run across the floor last week, no thanks! Simon - Review dated 5 September 2009 Royal Garden Food was really good and different from the normal chinese. Staff were very friendly and attentive and patient with my 88 year old father. Price I thought was moderate,we had starters and a main meal, 6 CocaColas, one glass white wine, one tiget beer a bottle of water and there were five of us and the bill came to £94. Only gripe I have I do not like restaurants who add service charge as I often wonder if this goes to the staff, even though the service was excellent I would have been happy to have left 10% for the staff, instead of paying it on the bill, then on the other hand maybe some people don't leave gratuities. Will go again. Easy parking and venue great Julia - Review dated 7 October 2007 Royal Garden Restaurant Been a regular here for years, I personally find the food good value, prices have not gone up for last 10 years. For a great view, comfortable seats and good sized tables in a nice decor, you can't find better in the same category. S Watts - Review dated 24 August 2007 Royal garden Satuday 18th August 2007. A small group of us went to the resturant for a friends birthday. Although I can not fault the food. The service was appalling, we had booked our table in advance but the staff gave us the impression that we had just walked in and taken pot luck. We were sat in the corner (of a not packed resturtant) under the air conditioning; which left all of the group cold. The staff served across members of the party, instead of to the left, then to add insult we had to constantly request our drinks. When we asked for a jug of tap water as well, we were presented with a glasses of warm tap water and was told on the second time of asking, that it is agiant policy to supply a jug of tap water. When it came to paying the bill (£225.00 for 6 people) we had to ask 3 times to be able to settle, this took the staff 15 miniutes. By the end of the evening we were all cold tired and feed up. I will not be going back again. Mrs Marriott - Review dated 23 August 2007 Royal Garden, Shirley Hills We visited Royal Garden from a friend's recommendation. Driving through a forest to get to this restaurant set in Shirley Hills is a perfect romantic setting and we were told that for a very short walk there is a viewpoint. The food and service was very good and there was much to enjoy as we had a lovely window side table so there was a nicely tended garden to view. In fact the restaurant is very nicely decorated throughout with a large conservatory section. On average the price is £20 a head, which is great value especially if you would like to impress with the romantic setting with delicious food. We plan to return. Julie Miller - Review dated 30 January 2004 The Royal Garden In one word - Superb - Exellent food - but you do pay for it. average cost: £20 set menu each plus 1 bottle of white at £20 = £60. Dave - Review dated 3 November 2003 Royal Garden Top of the market Chinese cuisine with Cantonese, Sichuan and Peking dishes. Attractive spotless dining room in single story wood framed building looking out on the Shirley Hills. A more varied cuisine than the usual Chinese with oddities like the 'Happy Valley' - a cold minced pork dish eaten wrapped in lettuce leaf. Food and service cannot be faulted - but seem to lack that 'wow' factor which makes a restaurant special. Not cheap - reckon on £20 per head. Ample parking outside plus the Coombe Lane tramstop is couple of hundred yards away through the woods (or you can walk round by road at night). Summary: Worth it for that special occasion. I've been back several times and would certainly go there again. Andy Ellis - Review dated 11 June 2002 sichuan gardens i was advised to eat at this restaurant by bradley crouch of body heat gym caterham. he had told me the venue was dirty and over priced. i found the smoked chicken in particular to be incredible. the whole experience was delightful. dean - Review dated 12 April 2008 Sichuan Garden I was recommended by a friend who told me this was the best chinese locally he was wrong a complete waste of money and time smoke chicken reminded me of purley kfc service from an elvis look alike was not great i would advise people to stick to the royal garden in shirley Brad - Review dated 7 April 2008 Sichuan Garden My favourite restaurant which I have been going to since it opened in the early 1980's. Haute cuisine chinese style but at very reasonable prices these days. The staff can appear brusque at times but only if they are very busy. The smoked chicken is exceptional. If you are feeling adventurous, let Ben the owner advise Brian - Review dated 24 November 2006 Sichuan Garden My wife and I have been going to this restaurant for over 25 years! I note 1 reviewer states staff are rude. One needs to understand chinese humour. With fantastic food, a lovely atmosphere and a great evening out every time, is this not every customer's dream? For a very special evening out, this place cannot be beaten. I note that the receipts are always in chinese so I expect to get overcharged but still may not get in without a reservation. Alan Neil - Review dated 12 March 2006 Sichuan Garden , Coulsdon Good food, Average Prices - Very Rude Staff - I would only go back to order a take-away as they have never heard of customer service. Dave - Review dated 28 July 2004 Sichuan Garden Bit pricey but plenty of food. Pleasant surrounding. Would go back again but on special occasion only. Chris - Review dated 25 May 2002 Tai Tung Tai Tung provides an excellent example of Hong Kong dim sum cuisine. Dim Sum is Chinese 'tappas', or rather Tappas is Spanish 'Dim Sum'. Why go to Chinatown when you have Chinatown food right here in Croydon? If you go on Sunday morning, you will witness a mass of mainly ethnic Chinese, patiently waiting for their table - a real testament to its popularity among people who 'know' about genuine Chinese food. Joanna Ho - Review dated 29 November 2006 Tai Tung Situated within the Wing Yip complex. Efficient service with competent food. Lacks atmosphere and is fairly expensive. Might suit for a works outing but not much else. If, however, you do happen to end up there, try the Fried Eel - it is excellent. Bonzai - Review dated 26 November 2006 Tai Tung The thing to remember with this place is that it's more like a traditional chinese dinning room than western style restaurant, the idea is your there to get fed not for a night out. Dont expect 5 star treatment and dont be suprised if your food comes out as it's cooked and plates cleared as you finish, Go to a restaurant in China and see how many people order for themselves. Get a selection, stick it in the middle and all dig in as soon as the first bit arrives. I personally find this to be one of the best real chinese restaurants I've been to and great if you want something authentic and not quite so westernised you want get it too wrong going here. Andy - Review dated 15 April 2006 Tai Tung Good food and menu but unfortunately has very bad service, worst I have ever had. Staff only give attention to Chinese customers and ignore the English. A Chinese family were sitting on the table next to us, they arrived after us and before we had received our main course they were paying their bill. They also had small children with them and after their meal the children were all given lollypops, after we had finished my daughter wasn’t offered anything. When our main course arrived we only received one dish and no rice, the rest of the meal arrived after 20 minutes of waiting, by that time the dish that arrived first was cold, staff said they would replace it and just didn’t bother. When we received our bill we mentioned this and they refused to give us a refund for the dish. After the meal we asked for the remainder of food to be taken away with us so we could eat later and the staff mixed up all the dishes and rice into ONE container. Would NOT recommend this restaurant to ANYONE Nick Wilson - Review dated 19 February 2006 Tai Tung I read some of the reviews here, seems to be a mixed response. I think I should point out it is the only Chinese restaurant in Croydon that serves a wide selection of dim sum. Another good indicator is how many Chinese people actually eat there. If you go at a weekend it gets very busy so don't expect to sit around for a chat afterwards, if I was running a restaurant I'd want to maximise my takings too. It is a bit more expensive than in Chinatown but then there are no other competitors nearby that serve a similar menu. James - Review dated 21 January 2006 Tai Tung The food is getting from bad to worse, very oily and over cooked. Fry noodies or roast meats are getting very small in portion. Went there again recently with our infant and the high chair is rubbish, DIY hand stiched seat belt? totally unsafe.... My GOd, that's outrageous consider how much £££ they have taken from their customer. Totally, dissappointed!!! The only reason to eat here is PURELY parking... I've since found a new resturant in Wimbledon which is 100% better... goodbye to Tai Tung... it is simply RUBBISH!!! philip Lam - Review dated 14 October 2005 Tai Tung This is the only place to get top quality Chinese food! Yes its not romantic and the waiters dont put your napkins on your lap, but thats not part of the Chinese culture; good food is! When you go, try something different, you can get sweet and sour pork anywhere! One of my favorites is the 'Mixed meat hotpot with tofu', great mix of meat, fish and tofu yum! A must is 'Dim Sum' on Sunday. Every Sunday they do a special Dim Sum menu, ITS FANTASTIC! Come down early though, and be prepared to stand about outside waiting for at least 20mins. Steamed meat and seafood dumplings, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! What an experience! My family is of an oriental background, and we eat there all the time! Sion - Review dated 22 December 2004 Tai Tung High turnover of customers seems the priority. No sooner had we finished one course, than the serving plates for the next course seemed to have arrived! This aside, the food was excellent, plenty to eat, no-one going hungry and the staff seemed very attentive. The only point of dissatisfaction was the air conditioning, which on a very hot day, seemed very overboard! At one point, there was two, of a party of four, cold!! As previously noted, food very well cooked and plentiful. I would go again, and would also recommend to family or friends. enaid - Review dated 4 August 2002 Tai Tung The restaurant is clean, bright and with a vast choice on the menu. Tables are slightly too close together and a bit cold in the room with air conditioning on, but the service is quick, but with a brusque attitude. A wide variety of different nationalities enjoy the establishment, including a young age group. Beware, the moment you've finished one course, the next is promtly on your table. Food is excellent. Our party of four had a set meal at £15.50 per head and there were generous amounts of it! This is somewhere, where I think children would enjoy the food, but ask for a spoon or fork, as only chopsticks provided on the table. Quite good value for money, but don't drink too much otherwise the bill is high. Bagpuss - Review dated 4 August 2002 Tai Tung Setting for this restaurant is settled in Modern building with an eastern touch. Inside design with turnover in mind, the lighting is bright, decor has a few eastern touches. It's not designed for romantic meals, and you are confronted with chopsticks, but cutlery is provided if you wish. Staff are knowledgeable, polite and keen to help. It has a comprehensive menu and there is a good selection of set meals. The food arrives hot, and is of a good standard, but the staff are very prompt to remove empty dishes so beware the courses do follow in rapid succession, so eat at your own pace. I would return here, and it is a place I would be happy to take my children to, it can get very busy and seems to attract all walks of life, which I feel is a recommendation in itself. The cost of our meal was around £15-17 per head, but beware the bill can quickly add up if you like a drink or two Racauk - Review dated 4 August 2002 Tai Tung No trouble parking and you can keep an eye on your car while eating. Four of us went on a Tuesday evening (without booking). All the waiters in the restaurant served us during the evening so we never had to wait for service. It is reassuring to see chinese eating in a chinese restaurant but most of the ethnic communities in Croydon seem to have discovered the Tai Tung and during our visit there were family parties of Indian, African, Caribbean, Italian and English customers as well as chinese. A big vote of confidence in the quality of the restaurant. We had a £15.50 per head set meal for four which had four starters, Hot and sour soup, Duck and pancakes, and then four more main dishes with rice. The non-drivers in the group drank gin and tonics, saki and Great Wall wine, we finished with coffee and tea. The total bill including service was £102. The food was well cooked and presented and far more than we could eat. A great place for a relaxing family party at £15 to £25 per head Shenair - Review dated 17 July 2002 Twinkle jus had an amazing take away from here, very fresh, no sickly after taste, reasonably priced and quick delivery - would recommend this very highly vikki - Review dated 11 June 2010 Twinkle Further to our friend's recommendation to this MSG free restaurant in Purley, the food was excellent and a friendly service. I highly recommend the Mix starter and their MSG free crispy duck. Kim - Review dated 16 October 2006 Welcome Friends Nicely decorated with comfortable surroundings and friendly staff. The menu offers a fairly standard range of dishes and whilst the cooking is certainly competent, there is nothing that is particularly inspiring. Decent place, hard to fault, but does not make it into that 'special' category. Bonzai - Review dated 30 November 2007 Welcome Friends My favourite chinese restaurant! Friendly staff, great food. Always do their best to accommodate you if you haven't booked in advanced. Ellie - Review dated 25 September 2007 Welcome Friends Wonderful food, friendly staff, very accommodating when we bring our baby. Charles - Review dated 14 December 2006 Welcome Friedns I've been coming here since i moved to Addiscombe 5 years ago and I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants well cooked chinese food. The staff are great and their food excellent - their aromatic duck is out of this world. They make their customers feel so welcome and if you're after something that isn't on their Menu, they'll try to cook it for you. One thing i have to add is they're not stingy on their portions. Lauren Ash - Review dated 21 February 2006 Welcome Friends My favourite restaurant when I lived in Addiscombe, I still travel back just to eat here. Reasonable prices, excellent service and the best Chinese food I’ve tasted anywhere short of Chinatown. Try the crispy Duck or the fantastic Chilli Squid Andy Sheehan - Review dated 17 October 2005 welcome friends this restaurant has the best chinese food in town. the ladies in there are so friendly if you pop in tell them chris sent you. chris thairs - Review dated 17 June 2003 Welcome friends Ma days... this restaurant is heavi. wicked food trust!!! Kelz - Review dated 10 June 2003 Xin Very good - brilliant service, and great food. Been a few times now and wouldn't go anywhere else because I don't need to! RECOMMENDED. Jon - Review dated 18 November 2007 Xin The Xin is spotless, spacious and nicely decorated. Background music could come down a decibel or two but is not really intrusive. Service is excellent and staff are willing to help with any special requirements. They were happy to swop a meat item on the fixed lunch menu for a veggy equivalent and also identify wheat-free dishes. A couple of niggles. The 'all-you-can-eat' banquet is not quite as simple as that and needs a little thinking through by the management. We are also asked to pay for drinks at the time of ordering when eating with a party in the evening, but one can live with that. Let us, however, set these minor matters aside and consider the food. It is very good. There is the usual range of Chinese dishes plus some excursions into Thai and Malay territory. For something different, try the Beancurd Rendang which is an interesting variant on the usual Beef variety. Recommended. Bonzai - Review dated 9 October 2006 Mrs Wongs - Streatham Always a pleasure eating here. Friendly, accommodating and child friendly. Upstairs caters for larger groups of 6 or more. You bring your own drinks including alcohol which helps to keep costs down. Food is first class, large portions and reasonably priced. Madge - Review dated 14 August 2005 Click here to add a review
